Mormonism and Christianity

People are talking a lot about Mormonism lately, due to the current political environment. I have no desire to get into politics here, but I did want to address the question of whether or not Mormons are Christians.

Some great websites have tackled this issue recently, so instead of writing basically the same thing. I’ll just share what they’ve had to say.

Amy Spreeman at Stand up for Truth bluntly declared that the answer is “No.” She went on to explain that, “The Truth has become increasingly muddy for Christendom because  many evangelicals and almost ALL Mormons believe that Mormons must be  Christian, because they say they believe in and love Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

But the real truth is that Mormonism preaches a different “jesus;” a different “gospel” and a different “truth.” So the answer we need to hear is that Mormonism and biblical Christianity cannot be squared; they are completely different faiths.”

Speaking of evangelicals saying that Mormons are Christians, World Magazine has a commentary on the subject by Janie B. Cheaney. She also makes an astute comparison between Pastor Joel Osteen (based on his recent comments) and Mr. Broad from Pilgrim’s Progress.

If you’re looking for some clarification about theological differences, Med of Mud recently explained the doctrinal differences between Mormonism and Christianity:

“Mormons are Polytheist.  This means they believe in more than one God. This is a direct violation of the first commandment. They believe that the Trinity is three separate gods as well as that anyone can progress to be a god.  Adam is one of these gods who progressed into one of the three degrees into godhood.  The Mormon Jesus is also different.  Their view of Jesus is the spirit brother of Lucifer, and was brought into the flesh by Adam having sexual intercourse with Mary.  The Mormon view of salvation is also different.  Almost everyone gets a second chance in the next life, hardly anyone goes to hell.  If you have done enough good works you too can become a god.  In the Mormon world, Jesus only helped a little bit, you must do the rest.  It is not the Christian Jesus.  The Christian Jesus is the Jesus who won your complete salvation, not just half of it.”

    Thank you for the mention!

  2. I wasn’t aware that Mormons thought they were true Christians. They seem like modified Christians following a set of rules off-set from the Bible.

All the Mormons I’ve known personally called themselves Mormons and were open about the fact that they considered the Bible to have errors, and viewed the Book of Mormon as superior. I’ve seen recent advertising from the Mormon church that portrays it in a more Christian light though.

What I find more troubling is how many Christians don’t seem to know the difference.
